They share the same DNA, but each has unique and undeniable perks that help you customize your banking experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To take full advantage of those perks, you need to know the difference between the two. Though we may be a tad biased (#teamcreditunion), we believe everyone should have the info they need to be financially confident, regardless of where they bank. They don\u2019t distribute profits to shareholders; instead, they invest the profits back into the credit union to advance the organization\u2019s mission, which in our case is \u201cHelping members achieve financial success.\u201d Any surplus is typically returned to members in the form of <a href=\"\/blog\/financial-education\/why-choose-a-credit-union-over-a-bank\/\">lower fees, better interest rates, or improved services.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">As for-profit organizations,<\/mark> <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">banks<\/mark> are responsible for generating profit for its owners or shareholders. Each member has an equal vote in the credit union&#8217;s decisions, regardless of the amount of money they have deposited. Members are represented by a volunteer board of directors, usually composed of credit union members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Banks:<\/strong> Because banks are owned by shareholders who expect a return on their investments, they typically use a top-down approach, leaving large-scale decisions up to the shareholders themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">Access and Branch Network<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Credit Unions:<\/strong> Credit unions may have a more limited branch and ATM network, especially if they are community-based. However, many credit unions participate in shared branching networks and provide <a href=\"\/services\/online-banking\/\">mobile banking<\/a>, allowing members to access services from further away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Banks:<\/strong> Banks typically have a larger branch and ATM network, especially if they are national or international institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">Interest Rates, Fees, and Services<\/mark><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Credit Unions:<\/strong> Credit unions often offer lower fees and more competitive interest rates on loans and savings accounts, as their goal is to benefit their members rather than generate profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Banks:<\/strong> Banks may have higher fees and interest rates on loans and credit cards, as they aim to maximize profits for shareholders.
