When faced with social and economic challenges, these people didn\u2019t just give a voice to the problem \u2014 they asked, \u201cWhat can <em>I<\/em> do to help my community become a champion of this cause rather than a victim of it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICCU (and individual team members!) donated $1.4 million in 2023 alone. That number may be impressive, but the truth is, it would mean nothing without the organizations that work day and night to turn those dollars into true impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we can\u2019t begin to name everyone who made a difference in 2023, we can highlight a few key organizations and the lessons they taught us along the way, plus leave you with a tip or two of our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Psst \u2026 Interested in community service in your area? See <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idahononprofits.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Idaho<\/em><\/a><em> and <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/servewashington.wa.gov\/volunteer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Washington nonprofits<\/em><\/a><em> to get started.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ronald-mcdonald-house-charities-good-relationships-aren-t-the-goal-they-re-the-foundation\">Ronald McDonald House Charities: Good relationships aren\u2019t the goal; they\u2019re the foundation.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Resilient relationships are at the heart of all united communities \u2014 a fact the Ronald McDonald House Charities not only knows but lives and breathes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1974, the first Ronald McDonald House opened with one mission: helping families stay near their hospitalized children. Even then, <a href=\"https:\/\/rmhc.org\/rmhc-family-stories\/dr-audrey-evans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">co-founder Dr. Audrey Evans<\/a> knew two things most didn\u2019t, that <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">\u201ca family with a sick child is a sick family,<\/mark>\u201d and that she could help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, half a century later, RMHC has expanded to include three core programs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rmhc.org\/our-core-programs\/ronald-mcdonald-house-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">House programs<\/a> are located in the top level of hospitals throughout the world, allowing parents to stay near their hospitalized child without worrying about cost or sacrificing quality care.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rmhc.org\/our-core-programs\/ronald-mcdonald-family-room-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Family Room programs<\/a> offer a quiet place where families can rest and recharge just steps away from their child\u2019s hospital room. With in-house laundry and showers, they can take a break, have a bite, and freshen up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rmhc.org\/our-core-programs\/ronald-mcdonald-care-mobile-programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Care Mobile programs<\/a> give children free preventative care, including health education and medical\/dental exams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Year after year, our work with RMHC reminds us that strong communities are built by strong support systems.<\/strong> That\u2019s why in 2023, entire ICCU teams volunteered in RMHC kitchens, and ICCU supported their annual Summer Movie Series and Red Shoe Shindig Gala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t be there for every person in every moment of need, but we\u2019re here to uplift and support families so they can. Families and friends are the <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarworks.wmich.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=2764&amp;context=jssw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">foundation of community<\/a> \u2014 when they grow stronger, we all do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2251\" height=\"2036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog.webp 2251w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog-600x543.webp 600w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog-1200x1085.webp 1200w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog-768x695.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog-1536x1389.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/2_RMHC-Impact_blog-2048x1852.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2251px) 100vw, 2251px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rmhc-community-services-in-idaho-and-spokane\">RMHC Community Services in Idaho and Spokane<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>RMHC has <a href=\"https:\/\/rmhc.org\/find-a-chapter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chapters in Boise and Spokane<\/a> and the following programs in the areas we serve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>House programs in Boise, Coeur d\u2019Alene, and Spokane<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family Room programs in Idaho Falls and Spokane<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-idaho-youth-ranch-make-space-for-pain-so-joy-can-flourish\">Idaho Youth Ranch: Make space for pain so joy can flourish.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a nonprofit dedicated to providing Idaho\u2019s youth with mental health assistance (and much more), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthranch.org\/aboutus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Idaho Youth Ranch<\/a> understands that slapping on a smile isn\u2019t always the best fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1953, they\u2019ve provided emergency shelters, residential care, youth and family therapy, job readiness, adoption services, and more. They offer teens what many can\u2019t: a safe place to tackle challenges like depression and trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve partnered with Idaho Youth Ranch for over 4 years, and in that time, we\u2019ve gotten a first-hand look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthranch.org\/successstories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">what makes the organization so successful<\/a>. They\u2019re not afraid to talk about the Big Awfuls \u2014 the inner demons that haunt many teens\u2019 inner worlds. <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">They face the problem head-on, then focus on bringing joy back into the youth\u2019s lives. Through this, they\u2019ve taught us that happiness and pain often come hand in hand, and that neither should be ignored.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one says it better than Scott Curtis, the nonprofit\u2019s CEO: \u201cIdaho Youth Ranch is all about turning adversity into resilience, knowing that it takes support to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2251\" height=\"2036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16034\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog.webp 2251w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog-600x543.webp 600w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog-1200x1085.webp 1200w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog-768x695.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog-1536x1389.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/3_IYR-Impact_blog-2048x1852.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2251px) 100vw, 2251px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-iyr-services-in-idaho\">IYR Services in Idaho<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Idaho Youth Ranch uses revenue from their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iyrthriftstores.org\/locations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thrift shops across Idaho<\/a> to help fund services like the ones below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hays House<\/strong>, Treasure Valley\u2019s only 24\/7 shelter for runaway or homeless youth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Counseling and therapy centers<\/strong> in Boise, Caldwell, and Coeur d\u2019Alene (individual, family, and group sessions available)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Equine therapy<\/strong> in Caldwell and Coeur d\u2019Alene<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Hands of Promise Campus<\/strong> in rural Treasure Valley, including the Residential Center for Healing and Resilience and the charter school Promise Academy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adoption<\/strong> and birth-parent services throughout Idaho<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>YouthWorks<\/strong> in Boise, an 8-week, on-the-job paid internship that gives teens the experience they need to get future work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Telehealth<\/strong> services throughout Idaho<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stukent-there-s-always-more-to-learn\">Stukent: There\u2019s always more to learn.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At ICCU, we obviously want our members to have all the banking products and services they need to be financially successful. But our goal isn\u2019t to just throw a bunch of tools at you <strong>\u2014 we\u2019re here to make sure you know the foundations of financial prosperity<\/strong> so you can decide how to best use those tools for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we teamed up with Stukent to not only lobby for <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sessioninfo\/2023\/legislation\/H0092.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">required financial literacy high school classes<\/a>, but to improve the quality of those classes themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stukent is a digital courseware company that is pioneering modern education with its simulation-based curriculum. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stukent.com\/high-school\/mimic-personal-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Personal Finance Simulation<\/a> is the only simulation that lets students practice real-world financial decisions in the safety of a classroom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">Working with them has taught us that progress begins with curiosity, with a drive to learn new things. <\/mark>We didn\u2019t know the state of financial education in Idaho (or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PDF-The-State-of-Financial-Education.pdf\">rest of A<\/a><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PDF-The-State-of-Financial-Education.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">m<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iccu.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/PDF-The-State-of-Financial-Education.pdf\">erica<\/a>, for that matter) until we researched it ourselves. High school teachers wouldn\u2019t have these courses if they didn\u2019t take the initiative to request and implement them. We parented with Stukent to provide the simulation courseware to all high schools in Idaho and Eastern Washington, free of charge. In 2023, lifetime users of the program surpassed 200 schools and 51,000 students, establishing Idaho as a leader in personal finance education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Psst \u2026 Is your school taking advantage of this <strong>FREE<\/strong> software? <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stukent.com\/iccu\/#schools-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>See if your local high school is signed up<\/em><\/a><em>.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-boys-and-girls-clubs-of-america-even-personal-development-can-be-fun\">Boys and Girls Clubs of America: Even personal development can be fun.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Boys and Girls Clubs will do whatever it takes to help kids become their best selves. They give kids a safe place to embrace their individuality and learn new things, all while offering parents some peace of mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They focus on six key areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Safe places<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentorships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mental health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workforce Readiness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diversity, equity, and inclusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Youth advocacy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clubs work hard to make these pillars both foundational and fun. They\u2019re not there to lecture kids or even to simply help them; Clubs are there to help them help themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to do that? Make it fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">Whenever we collaborate with The Boys and Girls Clubs, we\u2019re reminded that progress <em>should be<\/em> enjoyed \u2014 from the first idea to the final step.<\/mark> These kids are working toward better futures with every day they attend the Club, but it\u2019s more than that. They\u2019re finding community, unlocking positive mindsets, and breaking through age-old challenges. Many offer these programs and more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sports and Recreation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Arts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health and Wellness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workforce Readiness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Character and Leadership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-ve-learned-from-you-your-community-is-your-message\">What We\u2019ve Learned from You: Your community is your message.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We couldn\u2019t be prouder of our Northwest communities. The organizations in this article are only a handful of the <em>thousands <\/em>of people who are strengthening their communities both within and without organizations. These are people who don\u2019t wait for someone to do something \u2014 they see a need and they fill it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With every goal accomplished and every person served, <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-green-color\">Idaho and Washington show communities around the country that we care.<\/mark> We care about our friends, neighbors, and local businesses. We care about our nonprofits, environment, and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICCU is only as strong as our members, and our members are making a difference. We\u2019re beyond grateful for the inspiration and strength you give us.
